SOC 325: Sex and Gender

Task: For your final paper, you will conduct observations in a public place in order to understand the way gender frames individuals’ interactions with each other and themselves. Choose a location in which to conduct observation (Examples: A store, a bar, a place of worship, a gym). Tell me why you chose this location, and describe the setting. Are there any hierarchies in this space? Is the space obviously gendered in any way (i.e. color scheme, décor, music, etc.)? Do people interact differently based on gender? You will conduct at least six hours of observation. Drawing on at least three readings from class, as well as at least three outside sources, interpret your observations. What insight does the sociology of gender give to your observations? You will turn in a 2500-3500 word paper on this project at the end of the semester.
