Citing AI-Generated Text

When using AI-generated text in a research paper, APA Style requires that you describe the prompt you used and add a citation for the AI tool to your references list. Because AI tools generate different responses for the same prompt, APA Style suggests creating an appendix with the full response you received from the tool.

Here are the elements to include in a full citation for an AI tool:

  • Company that created the AI tool (examples: Microsoft, OpenAI, Alphabet, etc.)
  • Version year
  • Name of the model (examples: Copilot, ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.)
  • Version number or date (if the model has one)
  • Bracketed text that describes the source type, like this: [Large language model]
  • URL that links to the tool

Here are some example citations. For more information and examples, visit this post from the APA Style website: How to Cite ChatGPT.
