KIN 215 Basic Athletic Training: Source types

Basic principles and techniques of athletic training. Allows the student to gain a working knowledge of basic skills required to provide athletic training assistance.

Primary Research Articles in the Sciences

Primary research:

  • Asks a research question or states a hypothesis or hypotheses
  • Identifies a research population
  • Describes a specific research method
  • Tests or measures something
  • Includes a section call "method" or "methodology." This may only appear in the article, not the abstract
  • Includes a section called "results."

Secondary research: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Systematic Review / Review Article:

  • An article in which the author(s) have systematically analyzed and summarized existing research
  • Author(s) did NOT do original research. They are summarizing work of others.
  • Often focus on a general topic (such as breast cancer treatment) and bring together all relevant, useful articles on that topic in one review article.
  • Does not contain sections such as Methods (and Materials), Results because they did not do any original research

Meta-Analysis:

  • The use of statistical methods to summarize the results of the studies
