U.S. Patents: Step 1

A step-by-step guide to searching for patents on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office site using the patent classification system.

Brainstorm keywords to describe the invention

Brainstorming keywords will make your search for the right patent easier. You can find a patent search strategy worksheet at the bottom of this box which will assist you in finding the right invention.

Using the Patent Search Strategy Worksheet

Search example: I'm looking for a device which will help transfer a disabled patient from one place to another (like a bed to wheelchair).

Using the worksheet, answer each question by filling the space provided. Answer each question to the best of your ability. Make an educated guess for questions you are not sure of.

In the second section, expand on your answers from the boxes above. Think of synonyms or other ways to describe your answers.
